Kashmiri winter breakfast: I visited Srinagar in Dec 2015 and was looking for Harrisa for breakfast. Very few shops sell Harrisa now a days and it is not very common to see this unique breakfast dish. It is a very filling dish and because of the spices used in preparation keeps the body very warm. Also as it is a wholesome meal it keeps one full for a very long time. This shop on Red Cross road is a decent and clean place to enjoy the dish right from the pot after tempering. The bread to eat it with is on the house. The small portion is for Rs 50 or under USD 1 and the double portion is for Rs 100 or USD 1.7 (both portions good for a single person). It is also sold per Kg if you want to get it packed. Mostly men are seen eating at the joint (Get it packed if you want to have it with family). The unique dish made only during the months of winter is part of a traditional Kashmiri cuisine that is prepared with goat/lamb meat. The scrumptious dish requires a lot of time and effort not only it has to be cooked throughout the night but it also takes time in the preparation prior to its cooking. Harrisa is prepared with the boneless meat of lamb under mild temperature normally during the whole night. The mutton is also mixed with addition of rice or wheat as well as spices. The concoction is heated and constantly stirred for hours together until it becomes mushy and pasty. Onions fried in oil or ghee till they become golden brown, are poured onto it and when served. Harrisa is an awesome breakfast dish for the Kashmiris and some Kashmiris also love to have Kebabs and Kashmiri bread (Czot/Girda/Roti).
