The use of acoustic guitar has changed dramatically over the past century. Previously used as a tool for accompaniment in folk songs and love ballads, by artists like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, it’s now used by today’s biggest rappers like Dababy and Juice Wrld. It’s a drastic shift for an instrument that seemed like it held a very specific place in popular music. But with artists like Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift abandoning it to explore more electronic music, it was adopted by new artists like Post Malone and Lil Peep, who seem like a fairly unconventional fit. OR DO THEY? The use of guitar is actually deeply rooted in hip hop. And on the flip side, the acoustic guitar has often been used by musicians with a traditionally harder sound, like Guns N Roses and Tom Petty, to explore more introspective music. So it’s a fit that makes more sense than you might think, and in this video, we explore that. It's worth acknowledging that this focuses on the connection of acoustic guitar and hip hop at the highest level of the American pop charts. There are a lot of underlying factors and subcultures that also contribute to this shift that are not touched on in this video!
