RANE's Weekly Situation Report: Turkey, Sweden, and NATO

On July 10, Turkey formally withdrew its objections for Sweden to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, in a move that ended a year of back and forth negotiations between Stockholm and Ankara over Sweden’s accession to the alliance. Sweden and Turkey had been at loggerheads over the process: Turkey wanted Sweden to take steps to crack down on Kurdish groups based in the country, while Sweden’s government tried to navigate such demands with the country’s commitment to human rights and through its courts. But the process isn’t over yet. Turkey’s parliament must still vote on the accession in October, and it’s possible that Turkey renews objections to Sweden’s membership should Ankara feel that Stockholm isn’t fulfilling its obligations. Already, Turkey’s far-right nationalist party, the Nationalist Movement Party, has objected to Sweden’s membership, saying more should be done to ensure Sweden doesn’t overtly or incidentally support Kurdish militants. If Sweden’s accession process does go through, it will be a major boon to NATO, turning the Baltic Sea into an almost entirely-NATO controlled body of water. That will complicate Russia’s freedom of navigation in the region, especially its Baltic Fleet based in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, which, landwise, is already surrounded by NATO countries.
