A Chicago native, Lanier grew up on the South Side of Chicago with a stepfather who was on the Chicago police force. “When I was a younger prosecutor, I saw a prosecutor as an arm of law enforcement,” she told The Marshall Project. In this installment of We Are Witnesses, she speaks about prosecutors’ power to change the lives of victims, defendants, and communities as a whole. “While we’re not social workers, we’re certainly taking on looking at cases through a different lens,” Lanier explains, “so that when we do make those decisions on our cases, we are considering how this will impact the community as a whole.” Watch the rest of We Are Witnesses: Chicago here: https://www.themarshallproject.org/chicago Subscribe to The Marshall Project on YouTube: http://bit.ly/SubscribeMarshallProject For more criminal justice and immigration coverage, visit The Marshall Project's website: https://www.themarshallproject.org And follow The Marshall Project on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMarshallProject.org/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/marshallproj Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marshallproj/ The Marshall Project is a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization that seeks to create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system.
