Edmunds U-Drags is our series of down-and-back drag races that allow us to incorporate a standing quarter mile, handling, and a rolling start all in one race. In this episode, we put two of the hottest hatches on sale — the Honda Civic Type R and the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo — head-to-head. Will the GR Corolla’s all-wheel-drive traction be enough to overcome the Civic Type R’s horsepower advantage? Find out in the video! @edmundscars8 months ago Which of these two hot hatchbacks would you take home? Do you prefer the classic front-wheel-drive Civic Type or the rally-inspired all-wheel-drive GR Corolla? Let us know in the comments! 40

@DPCcars8 months ago Absolutely loving this series, Edmunds U-Drags! It's such an innovative way to test out cars, blending the traditional quarter-mile drag with handling and rolling starts. This episode is a real treat, especially for hot hatch enthusiasts. The Civic Type R's horsepower or the GR Corolla's all-wheel-drive! Keep up the great work, always looking forward to the next episode. 👏🚗💨 ... 105

@pacoflyer8 months ago You guys are killing me with the launches. You don't just drop the clutch You slip it. Keep it at peak torque until your going at maximum friction. 31

@Soh908 months ago Results were as expected. The CTR’s biggest disadvantage is it’s launch which somehow wasn’t an issue here. Trap speeds show that the CTR is just a faster car period. Good on Toyota for bringing the GR Corolla to the market though. What’s interesting is that even the GR86/BRZ is trapping at a higher speed than the GR Corolla. That little 3 cylinder just seems to run out of steam it seems. Obviously throw even the slightest bit of water into the equation and the GR Corolla absolutely lays waste to the CTR and GR86.
If it were mine money, I’d take a GR Corolla Circuit with a slight tune.

    @genetung85908 months ago Love both cars! I drive a Type R. I wouldn’t mind a Toyota either. 15

@jbs2568 months ago I’m really loving these races. I LOVE the course you all developed. It’s about as perfect as you can get for a total test in a short period.
Now for a wish/challenge race. Before their time is totally up. The Korean Showdown. Kia Stinger GT2 RWD vs Genesis G70 V6 RWD with a proper upper package level. Sport vs. Luxury with virtually identical drive trains.
    Let’s do this.

@keithjackson49858 months ago It would be interesting to see what modern performance cars would do versus police package vehicles in this kind of test? 36

    @desmondmitchell56028 months ago That's impressive for a 3⃣ cylinder 25
  • @
@seanmcahill8 months ago I understand the difficulty of this ask - however, matching new vs. used performance cars that might be cross-shopped would be very meaningful especially for people shopping for a sporty performance car. Finding a 'representative' used version would be the big challenge given that condition, mileage, etc, make a difference in price and potential performance losses in a vehicle. Still, if a metric for the used examples were to be developed and implemented, then I believe this to be possible, and would be a fantastic addition to U-Drags! ... 5

@reclaimer34398 months ago The Corolla is rated at like 30 MPG! I'm a Honda Boy and love the Type R but commuting in a GR would be easier on the bank account with that MPG. 3
  • @
@dannybishop688 months ago The civic type r is amazing for a FWD car with so much power. It comes back so fast, and when it goes it goes. Two great cars indeed . The GRs only real advantage is off the line. 4

@jdiggy11958 months ago $54k for a Corolla! Never thought I’d see the day 😮 13

@kevinhamlett14008 months ago I have started mods on my friends GR Corolla. Done cold air intake, exhaust Magna-flow , just sent ECU out to get tune loaded. Next is intercooler and downpipe. 4

    Waiting for a C8 Z06 vs Porsche GT3 RS U-Drag race, guys!

@TheFranpito8 months ago the thing is that the way they launched the corolla in this video it''s not even close to the best they can do. If you maintain 6k revs you basicly are not doing any boost, so when you launch the car it just start building up boost from zero. On a "big turbo" and very boost dependent 3 cilinder it just bogs down. The best way for launching it is just plant your foot down and while the revs are climbing and it's making boost, at around 6/6,5k rpm dunp the clutch. that way they run consisten high 13's 1/4 miles, around 13,8/13,9, that would make this test mostly a tie. ... 2

@freddyflirt158 months ago Another great video! Would like to have seen the corolla do a full rev limiter clutch dump.

@Soh908 months ago I got into an argument with some bloke over CTR vs Model Y. Yes, I know, two completely different cars, but I still think you guys should do it. 2
  • @
@malcolmar8 months ago Very well done. You can't loose with either one. I am just glad in 2023, cars like this are still being made. Buy them people so they will continue to be made. 2

@mizmera8 months ago Great setup for drags. Toyotas good for me. Honda driving only for 4 years now, LOVE IT. Honda type R amazing.
But... for that toyota 3 cylinder... it is AMAZING to keep up.

@SilverScarletSpider8 months ago alright credit were it is due, this was a very entertaining video. great work edmunds team. please do more affordable cars. Audi RS3 vs Lexus IS500 u drag? 4
  • @
@JG-mg3if8 months ago Oh look another video of this two on perfect weather. The only difference is that somehow is the 1st in wish the GR losses in the 1/4 mile. Look the CTR is a little faster on a roll, same on a track. Gr might do better on a shorter/turn track. But the GR is not only built for dry track. How about doing rain, snow and mountains dirt back roads. Let’s see how those test turn out! ... 2
  • @
@HeroicHorizon8 months ago Just came across you guys...would love a U drive between Honda FIT RS vs Suzuki Swift Sport. Whole race would take a minute 😅 1
  • @
@shaunmckenzie26268 months ago Unfortunately pretty much any AWD manual needs to be launched in a certain way to get the full potential. If the Corolla was launched correctly, then it would win every time in this race. I have one and can consistently get 13.4-13.5 second 1/4 mile. 1 second quicker than in this test... ... 3
  • @
@AcuraChannel8 months ago The Civic should what a Type R can really do on a track. Good race comparison between the two. 1
  • @
@DjNikGnashers8 months ago Love the format of these videos.
I think my tuned M140i would destroy both of these by 2 seconds to the U turn, then wobble around it so badly both cars would overtake me lol 🙂

@twfinc68558 months ago I want to see a 911 Carerra S against a C8 corvette. or a GTS against the C8.. Not the Z06 it no question would win huge.. Im curious to know what the "normal" 911 with similar HP as the "normal" corvette does in this race as its a car I can fit in and am considering for spring 2024.. Lots of used ones are popping up. ...
  • @
@n-power-automotive8 months ago Please U-Drags do a FL5 vs an Elantra N DCT. No other channel will compare the manual Type R to an automatic Elantra N. Instead it’s always the manual vs manual, which in the Elantra N’s case is the slower of the two options. ... 1
  • @
@nickzarnetske99948 months ago I've heard of Si/Aspec guys launching in second gear since first is so short anyways, I wonder if that would have worked here (mechanical sympathy be damned) on the Type R? Either way, nothing beats a White ITR!!! 5
  • @
@user-fi9rd3rn9k2 months ago Thanks for the real honest review. I wonder how much faster and rigid the Morizo edition is compared to the Circuit Edition. Also worth mentioning the GR Corolla with or without LSD's shares the exact same interior as a 2019 Corolla Ascent Sport, that fetches for AU$20,000. ...
  • @
@juliangarzon70588 months ago Great video. I would love to see the Elantra N vs the type R. I've heard that the GR Corolla's Dyno does not reflect the power. 8

@tunerimports8 months ago So I used to race a CRX SiR, I enjoyed this but would like to see how the gearbox is myself as the shifts were a little slow imo…. Also you can break later making sure to set the cars up for the turns. But still entertaining. ...

@SSS-mp8th8 months ago Love the U Drag but I can't imagine too many are spending $50k for the Morizo, I mean I paid that for my turbo 6 Supra two years ago. 4
  • @
@robd14378 months ago Not sure if possible, but can't one switch out of AWD after launch? Dynos show a 10 to 15 HP drop from going AWD on the GR.
  • @
@crxtodd168 months ago On another channel they said that the corolla feels like it limits power during launch. Seeing these two head to head it certainly looks to reinforce that statement... 3
  • @
@aj28588 months ago To be honest, for a 3 cylinder, awd, that Toyota is impressive, only .50 sec difference. That's definitely race inspired. Now, do the same race but in the dirt. 4
  • @
@gabea.4588 months ago I'm surprised the handbrake was not used in the Corolla for the turn 3

@lordraiden53988 months ago Way back in 2003 my stock engine 2.0 liter 2002 WRX ran a 14.3 1/4 mile times with larger 17 inch wheels and crappy no name tires. Yes it was a prepped surface but like I said crappy tires that were not even close to the stickiness of Pilot Sports. How are these cars with 70 more horsepower running the same times? ...
  • @
@Subpac_ww28 months ago I think the reason the Toyota, and most other cars in the segment, have launch RPMs so low is that they don't want a ton of warranty transmission and clutch claims in the first year of ownership. Aftermarket tunes can rectify your problem for a small cost. ...
  • @
@rowdyjoshy17988 months ago i know this sounds weird but i think a 2017+ ford fusion sport would be a great car to put up against that type R. not many videos out their of the 2017+ fusion sport but they're alot quicker then people think and even i didn't no until i watched a stock 2017 fusion sport gap a sti back to back. def get one on the channel soon ...
  • @
@kashifa7238 months ago You should do not only a driver switch but also a lane switch. So a total of 4 races for the most amount of data and fairness.
  • @
@Crankwalk26888 months ago Best way to launch the GR is off the rev limiter, in 60:40, with expert mode on. I have a Circuit Edition and if you're looking for absolute best results no matter how harsh on the car, that's the way to do it.

@searchBLOC9418 months ago I'd love to see those stacked up against my NA Acura TL SHAWD. 1

@michaelrice41608 months ago Dear u drags , could u do a race with a kia gt vs honda accord 2.0t
  • @
@romper4444last month This is the morizo too with the extra torque and better tires, I figured the core base model would loose to a type r but not the morizo! Honda always takes it to Toyota since the beginning!
  • @
@roberts.wilson18488 months ago You should put in a tesla model 3 LR in this mix because of the price being right in there.,
Or if you want, the SR version that has little under 300hp
  • @
@fergusodaly35 months ago Maybe you could turn on the Morizo's rev matching next time. It would've helped. I'm guessing you didn't even know it had a rev-matching abilities since you made no mention of it.
  • @
@seekingtruthnotfindingany73018 months ago The Corolla did win off the line and that's were the advantage stops for AWD. The Honda Civic will be the next James bond car! 1

@eliasrodriguez45078 months ago How does it take the 7 seconds to hit 60 in the corolla? that's super slow. 1

@Montesmike158 months ago These drags are WAY better than just straight lines lol 2

@carlstrohm37858 months ago Should have used a core with the diffs or a circuit. The Morizo has shorter gearing for track use. 2
  • @
@ericvermeulen98538 months ago As a GR Yaris owner, best launch is 70 front 30 rear , putting power more to the rear wil bog the car burn the clutch

@deang89108 months ago I don’t understand why they’re both saying they want to generate “wheel spin” on the takeoff. That’s the opposite of what u wanna do… 1

@chrisvalleqatsi8 months ago Have you done a U-Drag with a Hyundai Kona N?
  • @
@R6Dave118 months ago Much better than a standard drag race. These cars take off like they are towing 3000lbs. They look so slow on a big strip like that.
  • @
@GraveUypo8 months ago this kinda reminds me of mitsubishi vs subaru of years gone. i like it
  • @
@bigcjm8 months ago The morizo isnt built for drag races. Its hard to argue the shortest gear version would be best for this competition even though it would lose anyway. Anyways great video.
  • @
@roguedogx8 months ago Before watching- oh, tough one.
I'm guessing the GRs bogging will remove it's AWD advantage. So it should be basically dead even.
But I'm saying Honda takes it. Basically by rounding error.
  • @
@bronxtaskforce018 months ago Can you do 2023 Genesis G70 3.3 RWD vs the 2023 Lexus IS350 RWD?
  • @
@taelee3478 months ago If that was regular Core edition then considering the price it would be not been too bad... but come on! It is a $50K (+dealer markup) top-spec Morizo with no back seat, extra torque, wider tires than regular GRC and still lost? That is a bit disappointing for the GR. The CTR did just fine for a FWD pulling low 14 sec considering it is traction & rev limited but that Morizo better have pulled AT LEAST a mid 13 sec 1/4 mile with a 6k clutch dump. Launch was the only real advantage the GRC had and it completely blew it. Once the car is moving, straight-line or in the turns CTR takes it with more HP and wider 265 section tires. ... 1
  • @
@davidgriggs39678 months ago Looked like the civic R took 7 seconds to 100kmph , what elevation is this filmed at ?
Dragy stat's would good it gives G forces 0 to 60 ,1/4 mile and elevation.
  • @
@christopherdaniel61428 months ago swapping drivers was such a great thing , both drivers did a great job and it was all about the car . mind you the Toyota has 4wd no rear seats and is the top spec while the civic is just a plain jane in my books , Honda could do so much more to optimize the performance but wont do it and the fans know it . ...

@kevinb57178 months ago How about a match between new 2024 mustang gt vs 2023 mustang gt?
  • @
@jbm08668 months ago Not a Toyota fanboy, but I guarantee if you put both these cars on the dyno you'd find Honda is a little conservative in their HP/TQ numbers while Toyota pretty much maxed out that 3 cylinder as much as they could while maintaining reliability. No, I'm not saying a tuner couldnt get more, just saying the reported numbers for the Corolla are probably closer than the Civic. ...

@billwinch70438 months ago I'd venture to say the car's tires have more effect than FWD vs AWD. I always wonder why they don't just put the same tires on both cars to "level the playing field" :-)
