Types of sentence structures | simple, compound & complex sentences In this video, learn more about sentence structures and how we make sentences in English. (Simple sentences, compound sentences & complex sentences.) There are 3 main types of sentences in English language. We have simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. Simple sentences: A simple sentence has one independent clause (one subject and one verb) and it’s a completed thought. For example, Fatima opened the window. We can have a compound subject, for example, Fatima and nadia play tennis. We can have a compound verb, like in this sentence: I ate and had a rest. Some simple sentences even if they are longer but they are still simple sentences because they have one subject and one verb, for example, I ate dinner at a restaurant with my brother and sister. Compound sentences: A compound sentences is a combination of two or more independent clauses, joined together by a coordinating conjunction. (subject / verb) + (subject / verb) and both clauses are completed thoughts. I think FANBOYS is the easiest way to remember the coordinating conjunctions that we use to join clauses. Here is an example: Fatima opened the window and she looked outside. Complex sentences: A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The dependent clause has a subject and a verb but it’s not a completed thought. Here is an example: While I was having a shower, my phone rang.
