This is a 3rd video in the new series of gardening vlogs for 2020 by young gardener Aiman. As mentioned in the 1st video, Aiman will be providing updates on his mom's backyard garden & the progress report on the continuous re-transformation of that garden by his dad either on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Today is the 1st week of May. The weather for our USDA Zone 7B (Southern Connecticut is still cold). We had frost last week. Aiman's mom started planting vegetables that thrive in cold weather such as kale, brocoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, celery, parsley, iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce and more. Most of the crops above can handle light freezes & many of them actually prefer cold weather. In this video, Aiman also take you to the front of the house where their Kwanzan Cherry tree is blooming and blossoming beautifully. There are azeleas, pink and red double knock out roses, dwarf red & green japanese maple, bloodgood japanese maple and a few other ornamental trees that are growing nicely. The strawberries have been re-planted in their 3-tier custom designed raised garden box (technically they should've been re-planted in August of last year). The blueberries were re-potted inside upcycled used tires. Aiman's dad continues to make major improvements, innovations and re-transformation to his mom's backyard organic garden. Their garden had a major makeover 10 years ago so it is fitting that a major overhaul is in order. Besides, they've learned a lot over the years on what's working and what needed to be changed, eliminated or improved. Some of the major changes they've made include a new height expandable garden bed using scrap pressure treated wood or lumber to replace the plastic totes and planters they've been using over the years. They made 2 18 inches by 8 feet height adjustable raised bed. There's a separate video on Aiman's channel if you're interested in finding out how to build these raised garden beds. They've also made 9 smaller size 18 inches by 18 inches height expandable raised garden beds for tomato plants. Their existing square custom made trellis for tomato plants fit perfectly in these beds. The biggest change is for the raised garden bed inside the fully fenced in garden section of the backyard. The original garden beds were about 10 inches height. Aiman and his dad modified the raised bed and added another 6 inches to them. These were done to make it easier, more ergonomic, comfortable and enjoyable for his mom. They've started to take down the old trellis and are planning to design new ones which will be a little shorter in height. In addition to deer and other wild animals finding ways to rummage their garden, they've also had problems in the past with beavers from a river nearby coming into the garden and eating the younger plants therefore they've made plans on how to design a new fencing system which could prevent these animals from coming through. If you're interested in watching the 1st makeover for their garden from 2010 or about ten years ago, these 2 videos, "My Mom's Backyard Garden" and "How My Dad Transformed My Mom's Garden" are very popular.
